A CHILDREN'S TOY FOR THE LEXINGTON LIVING ARTS AND SCIENCE CENTER

SINE is an interactive toy for children to play with at Lexington’s Living Arts and Science Center. The Center asked for mechanical toys that could be manipulated by children of all ages and and would add visual interest to the entrance of their Engineering Exhibit. This project explores the relationship between two-dimensional drawings and three-dimensional objects. This toy projects the mathematical and two-dimensional Sine Curve into a moving, three-dimensional surface. Acrylic bars of varying widths and colours were placed in sequence along a center axis.  When the gears are aligned and the pistons are offset into each of the seven holes, the resulting movement of the bars is a sine wave. The bars are coloured in twenty different hues that span the electromagnetic spectrum, which itself is based on the Sine Wave.  The work was on public display between September and December 2017.
